What this library publishes, and what it does not

Everything here is free to read, carries no advertising, and asks nothing of you. That only works if the library is careful about what it puts up. Every volume is either old enough to belong to everybody, or published because the person who holds the rights said it could be. Where the answer was unclear, the book is not here — and this page says which ones, and why.

The World English Bible (WEB), Complete — a translation of the 2000sThe World English Bible is a modern revision of the 1901 American Standard Version whose makers (Rainbow Missions / eBible.org, Michael Paul Johnson, editor) placed it in the public domain, a dedication stated on every edition and on ebible.org. Project Gutenberg (#8294) distributes it on that footing. Fetched 2026-09-06 for the parallel scripture reader; no notice is carried in the text itself, which is why the reason is recorded here rather than left to the gate.

Every one of these is in the archive and none of them is published. They are listed because a reader who comes looking for one should find out that it was a decision, not an oversight.

Third-party material inside declassified files (40)

United States government works carry no copyright. That does not extend to what the government photocopied into the folder, and these files reproduce whole articles from journals and magazines that are still in copyright — Nature, the Proceedings of the IEEE, Psychological Bulletin, the Journal of Parapsychology, a French science magazine, a page of National Geographic. The agency marked those pages itself when it released the files.

Free to distribute, but our copy does not carry the notice (2)

The author gave permission on condition that the complete text and his copyright notice travel together. The library's copies of these have lost the notice, so publishing them would break the very condition that allows it. They are held until a copy carrying it turns up — a fixable problem, not a permanent one.

Comselha: An Enochian Macrocosmic Ritualfree-distribution licence, but this copy carries no copyright notice at all, and the licence requires the complete text and the notice to travel together.

The underlying work is old enough to be free, but this particular typesetting, translation or apparatus is not. Where the library holds a clean public-domain copy of the same text, that one is published instead — Leland's Aradia and Charles' Book of Enoch are both here, just not in these editions.

Names held back across the board

Anything arriving under one of these names is held, from any source. Matching on the name rather than the book is deliberate: it stops a second copy of the same work slipping in from somewhere else under a different title. They are matched as written here, which is why some are bare surnames — a net is meant to be wide.

Benjamin Rowe appears here and also among the works published by permission above. That is not a contradiction — it is what the rule is for. The name is held by default, and lifted only for the particular works whose licence the library can show it meets. Other works by the same author stay down, including ones under the same licence whose only surviving copy here is too damaged to satisfy it.

Served in some countries only

Copyright terms differ by country. A few works have entered the public domain in the United States, where the 95-year term from publication has run, while their authors died recently enough that Britain and the European Union still protect them for seventy years after the author’s death. The library serves those works where they are public domain and nowhere else: a visitor elsewhere is told so, and told the year the work opens everywhere. The country comes with the request and is not recorded. The rule is applied one volume at a time, by name, and this is the whole list.

The Bardo Thodol: The Tibetan Book of the Dead

Evans-Wentz, W. Y. (Walter Yeeling), 1878-1965 (ed.); Kazi Dawa-Samdup (tr.) · served in the United States · opens everywhere on 1 January 2036

First published by Oxford University Press in 1927: in the public domain in the United States since 1 January 2023. Its editor, W. Y. Evans-Wentz, died in 1965, so in Britain and the European Union it stays in copyright for seventy years from the end of that year, until 31 December 2035. The 1927 first edition only; the later editions add Jung's commentary and Govinda's foreword, which are in copyright everywhere.
