The dream books

Three dream dictionaries the library holds, laid side by side: what each says a dream of acorns, or of a ladder, or of your own funeral means. They were written to be sold, and they contradict one another freely; this index does not settle the contradictions, it shows them. Under every symbol each book’s entry is printed in full, in its own words, with the page it is on. Where only one book has the word, one entry is shown.

How this was made

Each book was parsed on its own printed convention: Miller’s italic headwords, the Golden Wheel’s capitals with a full stop, the Witches’ Dream Book’s marked run-on entries. A symbol is one headword shared across books; a plural and its singular are treated as one. The number beside a symbol is how many of the three books have it. Two other dream books the library holds — a 1675 chapbook and an 1890s pamphlet — are lists of sentences without headwords and are not indexed here; they are on the shelves as they are.
