Report a rights claim

This library publishes works believed to be in the public domain, and a small number that are still in copyright but whose rights holder granted free non-commercial distribution. Either judgement is made carefully, but it is made by us, and we can be wrong — particularly about modern editions, translations and annotations of old works, where the underlying text is free but a specific edition is not.

If you hold rights in something here, tell us. A credible claim gets the work removed from public view while we check it, not after. We would rather take down a book we were entitled to keep than keep one we weren't.

What we need

The form below builds a complete claim. It asks for the things that let us verify quickly — the more precise you are, the faster this moves.

Title as it appears in this library. If you arrived from a book page this is filled in for you.
The URL of the book page you are claiming, if you have it.
This matters. Most disputes here concern an edition rather than the original work.
The person or organisation that holds the rights, if not you.
Copyright registration number, ISBN, first publication date and country, a link to an authoritative record, or anything else that establishes the claim. This is the part that determines how fast we can act.

  2. Removed pending review. If the claim is credible on its face, the work comes
  off the public site straight away — before we finish checking, not after.

  3. Checked. We compare the claim against the work's own imprint, publication date
  and edition, and against the rights basis you gave.

  4. Answered. You get a reply saying what we found and what we did. If we conclude
  the work is genuinely in the public domain and restore it, we tell you that too, with our reasoning.

If you think we removed something wrongly


Public-domain works sometimes get claimed by people who don't hold rights in them. If you believe a
work was taken down in error, write to the same address with your reasoning and we will look again.
We keep a record of every claim and every decision.
